Chapter 13

“The chardonnay is a bit heavy for this…” Reginald declared as he waved at the bouquet of legs and claws protruding from the bucket between them. “But surprisingly refreshing,” he said before he took another sip from his glass. They shared a first course that included fritters of some sort, a saffron sauce and the largest prawns Reginald had even witnessed. The menu was in French and Reginald was content to let Hayes sort it out. Their main course was something called the La Zarzuela. From the waitress’ suggestive wink, she was clearly attaching a tremendous amount of romantic value to a seafood pot for two.

“I’ve heard really good things about this place,” Hayes said as he sniffed at his glass then shrugged before he took several large gulps. Reginald bit his lip to stifle a laugh then gestured for another bottle.

“You’ve never been here?” He asked in disbelief and Hayes shook his head. “How long have you lived on St. Thérèse?” He asked and Hayes grinned.

“Nine years,” he said and Reginald’s head pulled away and he flinched as he cracked a claw. He didn’t really understand why people got so bloody excited about lobsters (or langoooo…whatever they called them locally). The amount of mess and work wasn’t worth it, in his mind. He sighed longingly as he yearned for a kebab or a bacon butty.

“And this is the first time you’ve been here?” Reginald asked. It was a small island and there weren’t many actual restaurants, from what he’d observed. Hayes looked around before he leaned across the table.

“I usually avoid the resort’s nicer restaurants and bars because my friends aren’t welcome in them,” he explained under his breath and Reginald frowned.

“Are they actually discouraged from patronizing them or are they priced out of their reach to keep them from trying?” He asked and Hayes raised a brow as he blinked back at him.

“Is there a difference?” He said as he discreetly let his eyes sweep around the room. Other couples, mostly white, dined and chatted in tastefully elegant tranquility. Reginald’s nose wrinkled. If he was in London, he would have either declared it an out-of-touch establishment catering to fat aristocrats or relished the posh exclusiveness, depending on his mood and the man sitting across from him. He could be so iffy. One minute, he was spurning anything elitist and mentally patting himself on the back for constantly disappointing his family. The next, he was shamelessly reveling in some lover’s attempts to seduce him with overpriced, outdated haute cuisine and spectacularly expensive champagne.

“Places like this have their merits,” he murmured as he prodded his rice.

“They do?” Hayes asked dubiously. “The food’s decent but having to wear a coat is kind of bullshit,” he said as he shifted his shoulders restlessly and Reginald laughed.

“It’s a little more conducive to having a conversation,” he suggested and Hayes’ brows pulled together. Reginald’s hand flailed vaguely. “If we were trying to get to know each other, this would be nice,” he added and Hayes still looked unconvinced.
